Lyrics
Once Upon a Time There Was a Girl

By Mike Whiteley
Once upon a time there was a girl
With big brown eyes and a mess of brunette curls
When she was ten years old the sun went cold and her Daddy left this world
Oh, once upon a time there was a girl
Before he died he made her believe
In fairy tales that ended happily
When she was older he would’ve told her that it was fantasy
But, before he died, her Dad made her believe
She met this guy when she was just sixteen
He had a James Dean smile and a senior high school ring
They were on their own and feeling grown and that’s when they had me
Yeah, she met him when she was just sixteen
Father Time is a thief
He don’t give a damn ‘bout you and me
Looking back is like a heart attack its so hard to believe
Father Time, he is a thief
Life is hard with three kids on your own
She must’ve wondered where the fairy tale had gone
She cut miles of hair in a barber chair so that we could have a home
Oh, life is hard with three kids on your own
She met him and everything was fine
Now the hair salon had her name on the sign
She’d finally found her fabled crown, she was happy for a time
Yeah, she met him and everything was fine
Fifteen years went by just like a dream
Her kids left home to see what they could see
She said goodbye to family life and husband number three
Oh, fifteen years went by just like a dream
Father Time is a thief
He don’t give a damn ‘bout you and me
Looking back is like a heart attack its so hard to believe
Father Time, he is a thief
Life don’t always turn out like it should
Lord knows if she could change some things, she would
The fairy tales were lies in thin disguise, too late she understood
No, life don’t always turn out like it should
I never wrote a song for her til now
I always had the want but not the how
If I ever win thanks to my pen, I think she should take the bow
But, I never wrote a song for her til now
I’ll be good and drunk when Mama dies
Man, she cried every time I said goodbye
When it’s my turn, don’t be concerned with the rivers in my eyes
Yeah, I’ll be good and drunk when Mama dies
She ain’t just my Mama, she’s my world
Yeah, once upon a time … There was a girl
