Lyrics
There’s a Song in That
By Mike Whiteley 11-29-2019
(story sings)
Staci waited tables at a truck stop on I-20
(and) Jake was hauling hay from Oklahoma
He stopped in for her smiles, and she’d served him plenty
But, now he’s got a load for Arizona
He said, “Why don’t you just quit this place and hit the road with me?”
She said, “I packed a bag, just in case, and I get off at three.”
(songwriter works)
Oh, there’s a song in that, I can hear it plain as day
I know just how it ought to sound and I know what it should say
So, I’ll strum to get that rhythm down, then work to find that perfect sound
I’ll write down lines and scratch ‘em out, then write some more and never doubt
Someday I’ll write a hit I’d bet my hat, yeah there’s a song in that
(story sings)
Jake drove on for five more years with Staci by his side
When the stick turned blue they had their selves a wedding
A little farmhouse and a bunch of cows it cannot be denied
That for them and their new son this life is heaven
They found what they were looking for because they took a chance
In their socks out on the kitchen floor, they smile and start to dance
(Songwriter thinking)
Yeah, there’s a song in that
Oh, there’s a song in that
(Story and Songwriter together)
(Like) Jolene and Mama Tried, The Chair and Neon Moon
I’m sure that when they wrote ‘em, they felt just like I do
(Songwriter, determined)
‘Cause, there’s a song in that, I’m gonna write it any day
I know just how it ought to sound if I can pull it from my brain
I’ll drink a beer and a shot of Crown to loosen up and settle down
I’ll write until it gives me fits, then write some more and never quit
Someday I’ll write a hit I’d bet my hat, ‘cause there’s a song in that
Man this song’s a hit I’d bet my hat, yeah, there’s a song in that
(Story continues)
Jake is coaching T-ball while Staci’s in the stands
She’s got her hands full with a precious set of new twins …
